Work and Waste in Lean Manufacturing

Video 3: In this video I speak about the difference between “Work” and “Waste” in the lean manufacturing philosophy.

Work: Any activity that brings a physical or chemical change in the product is called work. e.g. In a turning operation, work happens when the tool touches the component and material removal starts and work ends when the material removal stops. Here there is a physical change in the product. i.e. the Dimension of the component changes.

Sometimes there may be chemical change in the product. e.g. curing of a paint coating, heat treatment process, etc. which is also considered as work.

Waste: Whenever there are no physical or chemical changes in the product, it is a waste. Lean Manufacturing classifies wastes into 7 categories and they are explained in our next video.
