Batch processing Vs. Single Piece Flow

Continuous flow

In this article, we are explaining the difference between traditional batch processing and Single piece flow. This understanding is critical for the successful implementation of Single piece flow which is the foundation of Lean Philosophy.

Traditional Batch processing

In traditional batch processing, every operation of the products are done in batches or lots. This creates high work in progress of items between the stations, thereby creating the inventory waste.  This high WIP makes the identification of quality issues very difficult and hence creating the defects waste. Also, the traditional batch processing is a push process in which the production happens based on the production schedule and not based on the pull of the customer.

Single Piece Flow

The Single piece flow is the pull process in which the products are produced based on the customer requirements.  In this system, the product flows from one operation to the next immediately with out waiting, thereby reducing the WIP. In addition, Continuous Flow also require less space as the machines and processes are kept closer together to enable easy material transfer to the subsequent operations. This method also reduces reworks as defects can be immediately identified and preventive action can be taken.
